The NSW Labor Opposition is demanding Transport Minister Andrew Constance give a full explanation of his failure to deal with a major incident that took place on Monday morning that sent the train network into meltdown for the entire day.
Train travellers across the network were delayed to and from work as a result of a fatality at Wentworthville on Monday morning.
Just before 6am on Monday Sydney Trains reported on Twitter that a person was on the tracks at the station and that delays would occur.
But twelve hours later thousands of travellers were told not to board overcrowded trains and to walk to Central because Wynard and Town Hall stations were too crowded.
Earlier this month NSW Labor warned that the new timetables introduced late November had made it almost impossible for Sydney Trains to recover from major incidents. Unfortunately this became all too true on Monday evening.
“This tragic incident has exposed the real flaws in Minister Constance’s much-vaunted timetable changes.
“Andrew Constance was quite happy to get up and spruik the benefits for the timetable changes but he has been less than forthcoming about the downsides.
“Minister Constance needs to give the train-travelling public and the wider community a full explanation of what happened on Monday night and give a rock-solid assurance that it won’t happen again.
“Minister Constance wants to be the minister for good news only but that’s not good enough. He needs to tell commuters if this is what they can expect from hereon in.”
